History

In the old South, Eastern red cedar was a popular evergreen hedge planting.  These trees were also commonly used as Christmas trees.  The Eastern red cedar located along the western property border of the Duke Mansion is likely a holdover from the hedge that once blocked view of the neighboring house on Edgehill Road.

These trees, which are actually in the Juniperus family and not true cedars, are prized for their ornamental, decay resistant wood.  Few are left to grow to their maximum size potential.

Our Eastern red cedar at the Duke mansion is one of the largest of its kind in Mecklenburg County, and a former Treasure Tree.  Come discover this Jewel of the Crown, hidden just off the main drive on your way up the hill towards the mansion.
